Furnishing a new place in Accra adds up quickly. Second-hand furniture is one of the best ways to save, especially solid wood pieces that will outlast anything flat-packed. Expats relocating, families downsizing and people moving abroad sell sofas, beds, dining sets and wardrobes every week. Here's how to find good pieces, check them properly and get them home in one piece.
Where to look, by neighbourhood
Furniture is heavy, so buying close to home saves you money and stress on transport. Start with listings in your own area and the ones next to it.
East Legon and Airport
Lots of relocating professionals and expats, so you'll often find good sofas, dining sets and appliances. See furniture in East Legon.
Osu and Cantonments
Apartments turn over often here, which means compact furniture that fits smaller spaces. See furniture in Osu.
Spintex and Tema
Family homes mean bigger pieces like wardrobes, beds and outdoor furniture. See furniture in Spintex.
Madina, Adenta, Achimota and Dome
Good value everyday furniture and a mix of local carpentry. See furniture in Madina and in Achimota.
If you're outside Accra, the same applies in Kumasi, Takoradi and Cape Coast.
What to check before you pay
Measure first
Measure your room, your doorways and your stairs before you go. A sofa that doesn't fit through the door is not a bargain. Ask the seller for the item's dimensions too. Wujibaba's furniture listings have a dimensions field for this.
Check for termites and rot
Look for small holes, powdery dust or soft spots in wooden furniture, especially underneath and inside drawers. Termite damage spreads, so don't bring it into your home.
Sit, open and shake
Sit on every seat, open every drawer and door, and give tables and beds a gentle shake. Wobbles, sagging cushions and sticking drawers are all easier to spot in person than in photos.
Look at the fabric closely
Check upholstery for stains, tears, smells and signs of bed bugs (tiny dark spots in the seams). Cleaning a sofa professionally costs extra, so factor it into your offer.
Check appliances work
For fridges, freezers, washing machines and cookers, ask to see them running. A fridge should be cold inside within about an hour of being switched on.
Getting it home
Agree with the seller who handles transport before you pay. For small items, a taxi or ride-hailing car with a boot often works. For larger pieces, many sellers know a local aboboyaa (motor tricycle) rider or a small truck driver, and their rates are usually reasonable for short distances. Agree the price for transport before loading, wrap glass and corners with old blankets, and be there when it's unloaded.
